Mohammed Jawad and the team at Nip n Tuck Surgery have been touched by the many letters and emails of support that have been sent in reference to the ‘Saving Face’ Oscar Nominated short-film which documents Mr Jawad’s work with acid burns victims in Pakistan. Here are just a few messages which have been so greatly appreciated:

Mrs Paenga, Australia
“Dear Mr Jawad – I have just finished reading an article about the wonderful, wonderful work you are doing and am writing this email to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the inspiration you are to me! I wish there were more people in this world like you, and don’t really know how to explain how much your beautiful soul, your generosity, compassion and the selfless giving of your gifted medical skills touched me. May God Bless you and your posterity forever.”

Angela, United Kingdom
“Your work is a true inspiration to us all. I wish you the very best with the incredible reconstructive work that you perform and I hope your Saving face documentary receives full international support and recognition!”

Rob Stephens, Australia
“Dear Dr Jawad – I read an article in my local newspaper in Australia about your work helping Pakistani women and children who suffered horrid abuse. Yes, your kind work is known here. All I can say is you are a hero. Not only from taking time out to help but I would imagine you getting some sort of response from local people who do these sort of things to women and children.

I admire women and children and to think that people can do such horror to them fills me with feelings that words cannot describe for I come from a broken family whose head of the family, the husband and father gave horrid abuse to his wife and my mother. Men who do these sorts of things to women and children are nothing but cowards and scum of the earth. Its people like you who help restore my faith in males. Bless you and take care.”

Every year in Pakistan, there are at least 100 people attacked with acid — the majority are women. Many more go unreported. ‘Saving Face’ is the story of two survivors of such attacks — their battle for justice and their journey of healing.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad, who earned prominence for restoring the face of British model Katie Piper after an acid attack, has left the comfort of his London home to return to his home country of Pakistan and help the victims of such attacks.

Zakia is a 39-year old woman who had acid thrown on her by her husband after filing for divorce and vows to find justice and restore her face to some normality. Rukhsana is a 23-year old woman who was attacked by her husband and in-laws and forced to reconcile with them. Saving Face follows their personal stories and that of the nation of Pakistan, which is attempting to tackle this vexing social problem.

The 2010 Pakistani Achievement Awards, hosted at London’s Hilton Park Lane, celebrated the extraordinary achievements of individuals of Pakistani origin, individuals who have made a sterling and lasting contribution to the image of their country. The awards were under the patronage of the Pakistani High Commission, and the proud Commissioner himself oversaw the award of ten Stars of Pakistan.

One Star of Pakistan recipient was Mohammad Jawad, a respected cosmetic surgeon. London based Jawad has hit the headlines in recent months for his stellar, groundbreaking burns reconstruction work on acid attack victim Katie Piper. Mr Jawad work with eight other doctors to treat Katie’s injuries with Matriderm, a skin substitute made from collagen and elastin, and also implemented a successful skin graft. The work was so successful that Katie and Mr Jawad have attracted nationwide media attention, including a Channel 4 documentary, and Katie has subsequently started the Katie Piper Foundation to support fellow burns victims, and help them receive treatment from surgeons such as her ‘hero’ Mr Jawad.

At the awards evening, Mr Jawad was also lauded for his work with the victims of the Pakistani earthquake of 2005. Beginning in October of that year, Mr Jawad became part of a support team consisting of nurses, doctors and paramedical staff, who converted the Al-Shifa Eye Hospital into a makeshift Trauma Unit. Mr Jawad, drawing on all his experience from the UK, was able to help the team receive twenty five patients a day for nearly two months, utilising only three theatres and one dressing room. The treatments provided ranged from routine reconstructive procedures to intricate limb-salvaging procedures, and Mr Jawad ensured that the team always secured the funds they needed to continue this vital and much appreciated work.

Two years after a horrific acid attack left Katie Piper with severe facial burns, the former model arrived at 10 Downing Street on International Women’s day and mingled with a host of stars and politicians in another remarkable step on this young woman’s journey.

Katie attended the function with Mr Jawad, and the pair were recognised by Downing Street security staff at the front entrance who had seen the channel 4 documentary about Katie’s treatment. This was a truly touching moment for both Katie and Mr Jawad, and highlighted the prominence that Mr Jawad’s groundbreaking treatment has achieved. Inside, Katie and Mr Jawad met Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Harriet Harmon, who praised Katie for her courageous recovery, and acknowledged Mr Jawad’s tremendous contribution to Katie’s happy outcome. Later, the pair met Gordon and Sarah Brown, and they thanked the Prime Minister for the money the government had put into the NHS whilst he was chancellor; money which enabled Katie to receive such extensive treatment. Mr Brown acknowledged the need for heightened awareness for burns victims and treatments, and, should he remain in power over the summer, kindly offered to launch the Katie Piper Foundation from Downing Street.

Pop luminary Annie Lennox also had kind words to say, and had her picture taken with Katie and Mr Jawad, before kissing Mr Jawad’s hand! Mr Jawad was delighted that Katie was able to attend such a high profile event, as it is another platform from which to build on Katie’s great outcome. “We’ve raised the bar in treatment, now it’s a case of making people aware of what we can do, and helping others receive the same quality care.”

An incredible story of one of Mr Mohammad Jawad’s patients has been covered by Scottish television broadcaster STV.

Seven years ago, Jennie Rawlins, from Caithness in Scotland, was given a chilling warning by her doctor: lose weight, or die young. At the time, Jennie weighed 44 stone, and was struggling with simple movement such as getting off the sofa and using the stairs, and her social life had become non-existent.

In 2003, Jennie underwent a gastric bypass operation that effectively stapled her stomach and changed her body’s natural responses to food intake. The surgery was so risky that the NHS would not fund it, so Jennie and her husband were forced to re-mortgage their home to pay the £11,000 surgical fee. The results were dramatic. Jennie lost 21 stone-almost half her body weight, and the outcome gave her a much needed psychological boost, but unfortunately she was left with a sizeable fold of skin on her abdomen. The removal of this excess skin required further surgery, but Jennie was determined to take the next step, and in Mohammad Jawad, she found the perfect surgeon to guide her through the process.

Mr Jawad, who has become renowned for his ground breaking burns reconstruction work on acid attack victim Katie Piper, matched Jennie’s determination, and was delighted to be able to help her achieve her goal. Jennie’s apronectomy was the most extreme Mr Jawad had ever performed, but the surgeon was full of encouragement and support, confident that the physical and social freedom that this surgery would provide would change Jennie’s life.

And so it has turned out. The surgery was a success, and after having almost 13 kilos of skin and fat removed, Jennie can now look forward to relative normality in her life-something that many of us take for granted. Mr Jawad was delighted with the outcome, but had a bleak warning about obesity in the UK. “We are going to see more of these cases. It is going to be the biggest nightmare in healthcare in modern times.”

Thanks to Mr Jawad, however, Jennie’s nightmare is now behind her. She now has two children and is a weight loss consultant, helping parents and children devise healthy eating plans. Mr Mohammad Jawad’s busy schedule recently included a trip to Buckingham Palace for Princess Anne’s 60th birthday celebrations. The Royal invite came as part of Mr Jawad’s work with ASTI, the Acid Survivor’s Trust International, a charity set up to help and assist victims of acid attacks all over the world, from the UK to Nepal and Bangladesh.

The Princess Royal is a patron of ASTI, and recognised Mr Jawad and Katie Piper as ambassadors of the cause with her invitation to the garden party. Mr Jawad’s tireless work for burns and acid victims in Pakistan and Third World countries has seen him represent not just the Katie Piper Foundation and ASTI, but also Islamic Help, a charity that assists people through crises of poverty and catastrophe across the globe. He recently raised £150,000 pounds for Islamic Help on three nights, giving presentations and informing people of advances in care, and how he and others are working towards making treatment available for an ever wider group of victims. His work has also seen him awarded with the Star of Pakistan, following an invite to the prestigious Pakistani Achievement Awards 2010.

At Buckingham Palace, Mr Jawad and Katie mingled with representatives of a hundred leading charities, and found themselves with an opportunity to speak with the Princess Royal herself. The Princess Royal, much to the delight of Mr Jawad and Katie, knew of their story, and praised Katie for her courage and dedication. She also praised Mr Jawad for the incredible work he had done to help Katie recover, and told them that she was keen for more people to receive such skilled and dedicated efforts. Mr Jawad found the Princess to be very pleasant and sweet, with a great sense of humour. At one point she told the pair, with a smile, that the Queen was away on holiday and had lent her the backyard, so make sure not to make a mess! Mr Jawad will be meeting the Princess Royal again at the Nepalese Embassy in the near future, working in concert to represent and help the people of that country.

Mr Jawad and Katie were very keen to have a picture of the event, but Palace Security meant that cameras were not allowed. However, the pair did manage to mark the occasion with a photograph taken on a mobile phone-the picture taken by a none other than a Palace Security guard!

Just two years on from a horrif acid attack which severely burned & damaged her face and body, ex-model Katie Piper has launched a charity dedicated to providing support and help to others throughout the UK who have suffered from burns. Mr Mohammad Jawad, head of London’s Nip n Tuck Surgery, has been named as a trustee of the charity along with celebrity and music industry icon, Simon Cowell.

Mr Jawad has expressed delight at the charity being launched and is eager to support and endorse the plight of the Katie Piper Foundation. The aim of the foundation will be to make specialist treatment and reconstructive surgery more readily available to those who have suffered from burns and require help with their rehabilitation. Follwowing Katie’s attack in 2008, in which a deeply corrosive acid was thrown in her face, Mr Jawad played a leading role in performing pioneering surgery to rebuild and resurface the affected areas. This work was documented last year in Channel 4′s ‘Cutting Edge’ documentary, ‘My Beautiful Face’, and gained the attention of millions of compassionate viewers throughout the country, including that of Simon Cowell who has since become a great supporter of Katie.
